Earlier Hybrids for Over-coming Harvest Challenges
Nov 20 2009
For the second year in a row, wet conditions—including some unseasonably-early snow—have affected the growing season and slowed harvest. That has a growing number of producers looking at earlier-maturing hybrids. Where to start?
Begin and end your search right here at Pannar, a company known for breeding shorter-seasoned yield leaders bred for this area. “Our early lineup is so strong, you’re not giving up any yield by selecting a number that is a little earlier,” says research manager Bob Schimerowski.
Some companies develop hybrids in less variable, southern regions, and then bring them north. That can be a gamble with your seed investment dollar. “But if you breed for this area, test in this area, and target research under our environment year after year, you’re definitely going to develop the product that works for the Dakotas and Minnesota.”
There’s also the propane factor. “If you can shave off 3 or 4 moisture points with one of our hybrids, along with being able to combine sooner because the corn has set up and reached physiological maturity before the first hard freeze, that can be pretty valuable,” he notes.
While this may be a year that’s not necessarily remembered too positively for combining, turn it into action that works for you next year: select an earlier-season Pannar hybrid that’s bred and developed for this challenging country we call home.
Some selected early-season maturities—available as triples or as Genuity™ SmartStax.™ Contact your DSM for the hybrid that fits your fields.
