All This And Chili, Too

– Fiery flavor. Sizzling smells. Tantalizing taste. Those generally aren’t the phrases tossed around most seed company offices these days. Words like “yield,” “moisture content,” and “will this weather ever break,” are probably said a lot more frequently.

But recently, a chili cook-off proved that Pannar is more than just a breeding and research leader. Turns out, the company employs at least one staff member that can help whip up a pretty mean batch of award-winning chili.

Pannar accounting manager Jeremiah Johnson is the chili-head in reference. His office is located in a building complex called Foxboro. Earlier last month, the various companies under the one roof decided a little friendly competition was in order, about just what family could make the best version of this Tex-Mex favorite.

It’s a feud that spans generations across this country, on just what goes into and who makes the most perfect batch of chili. But for now, at Foxboro, it’s Jeremiah Johnson—hands down. With 10 powerfully pungent chili entrees to choose from, his batch won both awards: the Chef’s Choice and the People’s Choice. The chef from a nearby restaurant, Mojo’s, served as official judge.

While some obsessed cooks guard chili recipes with their life, Jeremiah is a whole lot more laid back about this version. “I think what makes it special was that I not only use ground chuck, but also some beef Kielbasa,” explains the Pannar number-cruncher. He’s also, obviously, a man of integrity, because there’s someone else he wants to make sure gets a whole lot of credit in all this. “My wife, Kimberly, really made the chili, but I helped.” The Johnson chili, he notes, also uses three different types of beans.

It is said that the secret to making superior chili lies first, in the ingredients, and second, in the genius of the cook. Jeremiah, congratulations on your marriage to a genius and sharpen that pencil: you’ll need to multiply that recipe. Pannar CEO Barry Brown says you’re serving it at the next management meeting.
